Triathlon Distances Explained

Half Ironman: As the name suggests, this distance is half the length of a full Ironman triathlon (more on that below). A half Ironman consists of a 1.9-kilometer swim, a 90-kilometer bike ride, and a 21.1-kilometer run. This distance is a big step up from an Olympic triathlon and requires a significant amount of training and dedication. In miles, this equates to a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, and 13.1 mile run. Otherwise known as the 70.3 distance.

Ironman: The granddaddy of all triathlon distances, an Ironman consists of a 3.8-kilometer swim (2.4 miles), a 180-kilometer bike ride (112 miles), and a 42.2-kilometer run (26.2 mile marathon). It’s a grueling and challenging event that requires a high level of fitness and mental toughness. Total mileage is 140.6.

There are also a few other triathlon distances that are less common, including ultra-distance triathlons (which can be twice the distance of an Ironman) and aquabike events (which involve just the swimming and cycling legs).

No matter what distance you choose, triathlon can be a rewarding and challenging sport that helps you improve your overall fitness and endurance.
